The Wonderful Muffler Man

There is nothing Wonderful about this logotype for the local Saint Paul auto body shop. As of recently it occurred to me how often body shops display their logos and logotypes with underwhelming results. Most of the time, the logo depicts mufflers jaunting off of the descender of the y in auto body. Other times the T in auto depicts a car lift, rather than just a T. It's moments like this that make me wonder what the designer for these logotypes and signage was thinking, and what made them think that the inconsistent rounded lines shooting off of the W and M in the above image were even
valid options.

Yet it's still difficult to find a successful logo even for larger auto body companies who have more money to spend on their identities. Auto Zone, an auto parts store, has it right to a certain extent, yet still misses the mark in so many areas. Car-x also has a better outlook on their logotype, with their yellow and black color palette utilized to relate back to highway yield signs, and their Rx relates nicely back to medical help and has a certain duality to it. Yet, sadly to say, this is probably as good as it gets for the most part.

But maybe a refined logo for auto body shops isn't nearly as important to their customers. Perhaps the demographic would find more comfort in the fact that the logo for their local body shop looks generic, because then the cost would be much less. This could be the case, yet nevertheless, auto body shop logos are still terrible (for the most part) and I'm waiting for the day to find one that's successful yet still retains the character of the store.
